The first carrier-based variant of the F-35 Lightning II, the F-35C, was delivered to the US Marines at MCAS Miramar Tuesday. The fifth-generation stealth fighter is the first to be designed for use with catapult systems on US aircraft carriers.

On arriving at MCAS Miramar, the F-35C performed a celebratory touch & go for the crowd of Marines and visitors marking the occasion. After months of preparation and work, VMFA-314 “Black Knights” are the first squadron to receive the carrier variant of America’s latest fighter jet.
“It should be no surprise that VMFA-314 is once again leading the way into the next generation of fighter attack aircraft,” said Lt. Col Cedar Hinton, commanding officer of VMFA-314.
